The Newcastle campaign of 1644 carried the Civil War deep into the heart of the north-east. A Scots Army allied to Parliament invaded England in January 1644 and fought a running battle with the Marquis of Newcastle's Royalist army leading to the siege and storming of Newcastle Upon Tyne and ultimately to the battle of Marston Moor outside the gates of York
