Charge! The Story of England's Northern Cavalry
Charge! The Story of England's Northern Cavalry opened on the 21 st October 2017. It brings together the collections of the antecedent regiments of The Light Dragoons and also tells the continuing story of the Northumberland Hussars since becoming the Command & Support Squadron of the Queen's Own Yeomanry. Told through the voices of the soldiers the museum charts the pivotal moments in the history of these regiments, from the capture of Napoleon's carriage at the Battle of Waterloo (1815), the Charge of The Light Brigade at Balaclava (1854), and the D-Day Landings (1944) to more recent operations in Bosnia (1990s), Iraq and Afghanistan (2000s). The contemporary gallery uses a mixture of interpretative techniques to help visitors understand what it is that makes our soldiers who they are today. From dressing up to matching modern day kit to its historical equivalent to a pathfinding race game and an interactive map linking the regiments to the region there is something for everyone. A thematic approach explores different aspects of regimental life; recruitment, the changing role of the regiments, life on operations and modern day soldiering. The ever popular full size horse sculpture is displayed in full ceremonial kit and other highlights include a film installation of mounted hussars thundering towards visitors with swords raised in a cloud of smoke as though on a 19th century battlefield and a Drill Sergeant barking orders at any willing new recruits. Watch newly recorded interviews with former and serving Light Dragoons and their families which explore the challenges of soldiering in a modern world. For those with a particular historical research inquiry or interest there is a dedicated study area with access to the archives on Mondays to Fridays The gallery has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) who provided a grant of 422,600 towards the redevelopment and an associated programme of activities and events. RE: Charge This gallery includes RE: Charge, a temporary exhibition space. The programme for this area will be developed in partnership with local schools and communities including armed services veterans and the families of serving personnel.
