As we move ahead into another century, it is important to remember the lessons and sacrifices of the last.

The names of the men who made the ultimate sacrifice stand as testament to their lives on our village war memorials and monuments. As the last of their generation who can personally recall them fade, it is important that they are remembered as more than just names.

I hope to collate as much information as possible on the men of Ewhurst who fell in the First World War so that this may be held within the village history for generations to come.

Should you have any details, or be related to any of the men who appear on the Ewhurst Roll of Honour, I would very much like to hear from you.

The Parish of Ewhurst, Surrey is a rural community lying at the foot of the Surrey Hills encompassing the village of Ewhurst and the settlement of Ellen’s Green to the south.

The War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in the church of St Peter & St Paul details 51 names of men who gave their lives during the First World War or died of their injuries afterwards. A number of these men are also remembered on a separate memorial plaque in Ellen’s Green.

Some errors in names do occur and part of this project is to ensure that in future records these are not exacerbated and any omissions are rectified.

Similarly, I hope that the interest generated may be focused in a re-dedication of the Memorial on the Centenary of the commencement of the First World War.
