Ellen May Symons, born 10th February 1921

Died 9th May 1997

 

 

Terence Rowe was born and spent his childhood in Laira Plymouth, a lot of his holidays being spent at Cawsand where his family was based. He was in the Territorial Army with is father James John and had a happy childhood. On leaving school he started an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator but left this in order to work for the Great Western Railway were he graduated from engine cleaner to fireman. Based at Southall his war was spent running ammunition trains through the London blitz they used to try and get into tunnels during air raids. He married May on the 9th September 1942. His war service was with the Home Guard. After the war he left the railway and worked for the Western National Bus Company also working for Royal Blue long distance coaches eventually pioneering the Rapide motorway services to London for National Express.

Ellen May Symons was brought up at Prince Rock in Plymouth and on leaving School studied shorthand and typing at Priors Academy . She then spent a short period working in London living with family at Hayes in Middlesex. May was very homesick so she returned to Plymouth and worked as a Women Police Constable, shorthand typist at Greenbank. She left in 1943 to have children not working again until the early 1950's when she worked as a clerk typist for Riviera Confectionery. She also worked at Palmer & Harvey. She worked all her life and both her and Terry enjoyed an happy retirement. Terry predeceased her by several years but she coped very well on her own, leading a full life.

Terry and May had two children Robert Ivor born 14th January 1944 and Pamela Elizabeth Born 22nd November 1947 both were born at Flete in Holbeton Devon.
